DIED SUMMER 2018: Summer 2018 was especially brutal. Even with heavy shade it could not stay alive. There was leaf burn and die back even in late spring. It just kept dying back and eventually went kaput.

Just another persimmon tree in AZ grown on Diospyros lotus rootstock that is really unhappy. If you want to see a happy persimmon tree, look at this one grown on Diospyros virginiana rootstock.
In fact, I took scion wood off this tree and grafted it onto my Frankenpersimmon. And the those grafts looks phenomenal, dark green and lush. Whereas the leaves on the D. lotus tree look horrible. For AZ persimmon growers: It's all about the rootstock.
